Re: How to construct a Bow Trap
That's pretty cool! I like how you could angle the arrow up higher so if small game sets it off, you're not skewering squirrels. I would imagine you would place this trap along a known large animal game trail.

I was surprised how well that actually worked! That thing really kicked out some heat all night.

I talked to a lot of people at the gun show about next year's courses and they are plenty excited. If you see a dude show up for training sporting a ESEE-5 knife, you know where he got it from!

Re: Phillipines - Typhoon Haiyan
Very true, Trekker! Thats why evacuation plans, or bug outs as I call them, are so important. Especially for those who live in areas prone to hurricanes or tsunamis. Having a family plan stating where to meet in the case of an evacuation can really add peace of mind when communications are spotty o...

Re: Phillipines - Typhoon Haiyan
There's no amount of prepping that would have allowed someone to shelter in place and ride that one out. You would have to bug out to a safe location.

Re: Ammunition Storage
Strippers and bandoleers with speedloaders are certainly the way to go with 5.56mm ammo. I agree with portability - this isn't the Alamo, all that ammo has to come with you. Or maybe divide up your stash into what is going with you to bugout and limit that to just a few calibers. In my case, I'm onl...

Re: Hello from Wichita
Welcome! I would agree about FB! It's hard to have a meaningful discussion. You post something in a group, come back 2 days later and you have to scroll 15 pages to find your thread! Forums are much better for "how-to" type of stuff.

Ammunition Storage
I'm interested in seeing how other members of this forum keep ammo for long-term storage. I currently store most of my handgun and shotgun ammo in the original box inside a steel Army ammo can. I know that I could pack a lot more rounds in the ammo can if I get rid of the cardboard boxes, but I keep...

Re: CBs
Other than truckers, off-roaders use CB radios to communicate because of their increased range over FRS/GMRS. You can even get some decent range out of a handheld unit that is connected to the vehicle power and a magnetic base mount antenna. The key with CB's is you need to tune the antenna for the ...

Re: Find the best deals on ammo here
If you're in the KC area, Academy Sports has 525 bricks of Remington 22LR for $21.99, limit 1 to customer. They also had some 50 round packs that were pretty cheap.

Re: Home food storage question
Three things that are really missing from my food preps are hunting/fishing, gardening, and canning. I live in the suburbs of Olathe, so I don't really have much land, about 3/4 acre. I'm looking into buying land, hopefully around the Randolph area because I think the land around Blackthorn-USA is s...

The Defender is a really good choice if you are already accustomed to carrying a 1911. I conceal carry my Colt Commander occasionally and I really like it.

That is really neat! I may have to try that. I finally got around to playing with that piece of yucca you gave me for a spindle with a cottonwood hearth board. Re: BOV Pron (Pics and Links of your own vehicles only)
I love the K5 Dave! Speaking of BOV's there's probably several of us that are into off-roading and I was thinking of a cool concept for a Blackthorn-USA class. Maybe we could meet for some wheeling at the Tuttle Creek ORV and do some survival training related to using only what you have in your BOV....

Re: Sterno vs Cheapo - A Candle Test w/pics
I never would have guessed that one! I figured the Sterno "emergency" candle would do better than that. The just goes to show you folks, just because someone puts the "emergency" or "survival" label on something doesn't mean that it is up to the task. I've actually had a similar experience with the ...

Checking In
Hi, I'm Trekker, owner of Trekker Outdoors. I've been to the Blackthorn-USA B.O.B. course and I'm hoping I can make it out to more courses soon. I've completed both Basic and Advanced Survival courses from The Pathfinder School, so I would be happy to answer any questions about those courses.
